The importance of natural products

Many consumers believe that all natural products are better and healthier than other products, but consumers are often confused by the “all natural” label. What does that really mean? Now, Consumer Reports is launching a campaign to ban the use of the word, which they say is misleading and confusing consumers.

At the National Research Center for Consumer Reports, a recent survey of 1,000 people found that nearly 60 percent said they look for “all-natural” labels when shopping.

About two-thirds of those surveyed said they believed a food with an “all natural” label meant it was processed without artificial materials, pesticides or genetically modified organisms. But in practice, the FDA does not have a strict rule on what words to use on food labels. The FDA says it does not refuse to label foods as “all natural” as long as they do not contain artificial materials.
