Honey health benefits

Honey health benefits

Honey has been consumed all over the world for over 2500 years. Numerous effects have made honey an important element of traditional medicine. Now scientists are also using modern medical researches to find out many more benefits of honey:

Increase sweetness: Honey can replace sugar in various foods and beverages. Honey contains 69% glucose and fructose so that it can be used as a sweetener.

Energy source: According to the research of the United States Department of Agriculture, each tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, and one tablespoon of sugar can only give you 15 calories. Hence honey is often used as a source of human energy. The carbohydrates in honey can be more easily converted into glucose, even in the sensitive stomach. Honey is very easy to be digested and absorbed.

Weight loss: Although honey contains more calories than sugar, eating honey with warm water can eliminate body fat. Similarly, when honey is mixed with lemon juice, or cinnamon, it may provide more effective results for beauty and weight loss.

Improve body functions: Recent studies have shown that honey has a good effect on enhancing the body metabolism and helps improve the performance of athletes. Honey can help balance blood sugar and restore muscle and liver sugar after exercise.

The source of vitamins and minerals: Honey contains various vitamins and minerals. The content and type of vitamins and minerals depend on the type of flowers. Generally speaking, honey is rich in vitamin C, calcium and iron. However, the content of vitamins and minerals cannot be detected in sugar from any other source.

Antibacterial effect: Honey has antibacterial and antifungal effects, so it is used as a natural preservative.

Antioxidants: Honey contains ingredients that help us remove free radicals. It can also improve the body’s immunity.

Skin care: Milk and honey are often used together to make the skin smooth. In many countries, it is very common to drink milk and honey for skin care in the morning.

More information about how honeys help in weight loss

Many people ask: Isn’t honey a kind of sugar? Does it make you fat? Will the calories in honey make your efforts to lose weight in vain?

Yes, honey is a kind of sugar. However,  it is not like refined sugar! Honey contains vitamins and minerals. When the body digests and absorbs sugars, it uses the vitamins and minerals stored in the body to dissolve fat and cholesterol. When you eat too much sugar, you will gain weight, not only because of calories, but also because of lack of vitamins and minerals. On the contrary, a good source of honey can help you lose weight naturally and efficiently by providing the needed vitamins and minerals.

Honey and warm water: Generally speaking, if the body fat is not used, it will accumulate and increase weight. Honey can mobilize these accumulated fats into energy and gradually reduce weight. It is recommended to mix one tablespoon of honey with the same amount of warm water every day.

Honey and Aloe Vera Juice: Drinking honey mixed with warm water and aloe vera juice can help lose weight and have better results. Numerous studies have proven that aloe vera juice can help detoxify the body and cleanse the stomach. The effect of detoxification is also effective in the blood system. Aloe vera juice also helps make the digestive tract smoother. Honey + Aloe Vera Juice: The best way to lose weight and live longer!

The False Beliefs

  • Some people think that all honeys in the market are natural, since they should be from farms or the wild areas.
  • Some believe that honey products will not be contaminated by pesticides sprayed on crops.

In fact, bees are absolutely seriously affected by chemicals in farms where pesticides and insecticides are widely used. In addition, nowadays large amounts of antibiotics are used in the production of non-organic honeys.

General pollution in ordinary honeys:

  • When plants and flowers are sprayed with insecticides, the insecticides will poison the honey bees when they gather nectars from the flowers and plants.
  • Insecticides are sometimes even sprayed directly on bees.
  • Very often, bees will collect plant nectar and pollen that have been sprayed with insecticides.
  • When insecticides sprayed, parts of the pesticides accumulate in plants and nearby water, which then be contaminated when bees drink the water.
  • Insecticides are very likely brought to the hives by bees sprayed or contaminated.

The Bioland organic honey certification standard,  almost the strictest in the World!

We must choose honey carefully, and the production process of organic honey needs to follow extremely strict standards, so it is safer and more secure when consuming organic honey than non-organic honey. The Bioland certification requirements are even much stricter than most of the other organic standards:

 Keeping of the Bees:

  • If the location of the hives is an agriculturally used field it must be managed organically.
  • The location of the colonies has to be chosen in such a way that within a perimeter of 3 km an impediment worth mentioning of the bee products by agricultural or non-agricultural sources of pollution is not to be expected.
  • Only such numbers of bee colonies are to be placed in one location which allow adequate supplies of pollen, nectar and water for each colony.

Managing of Hives

  • Hives must be constructed of wood, straw or clay only.
  • In manufacturing the hives pollutant free glues and paints are to be used. Varnishes containing pesticides or those manufactured in chemical synthetic processes are excluded.
  • Treatment of the interior of the hive is prohibited unless this is done with beeswax, propolis or plant oils.
  • Cleaning and disinfection is to be by means of heat (flame, hot water) or mechanical. The use of chemicals is prohibited.

Wax and Honeycombs

  • Central walls, start strips may only be made of BIOLAND beeswax which has been produced in BIOLAND operations from natural honeycombs or wax for decapping.
  • Plastic central walls are forbidden.
  • Wax may not come into contact with bleaches or solvents or other additives.
  • Only devices and containers of non-oxidising materials are to be used for the wax processing.
  • For hive hygiene, only thermal processes and bacillus thuringiensis preparations are permissible.

Calming and Driving away Bees

  • No chemical synthetic materials may be used to calm or drive away the bees.
  • Smoke shall only be used to a limited extent. Means for smoke shall be of natural materials.

Feeding Bees

  • Within the scope of the possibilities of the operation, bees should be fed only using honey from the operation’s own bee-keeping.
  • Gaps in the feed with nectar supply are to be filled only by BIOLAND honey. Feeding with pollen substitutes is not permissible.
  • For the feeding only organically BIOLAND feedstuffs may be used, if not available, feedstuffs from other organic sources in accordance with the requirements of BIOLAND other organically produce managed farms.
